Queuing for the Level Crossing

LevelCrossingAnim

It's pretty near impossible to get the angle of a new photo the same as, or even close to, the original 1960s shot, so much has changed. Here I've gone for a straight fade between the two, to give a general impression of the scale of the alterations, Westminster Bridge particularly.

It seems odd now to see so many pedestrians waiting at the level crossing, but it looks like the cattle arch had been closed, in preparation for the building of the road bridge in 1961. In any case, this stretch of Station Road was busy then, and not the out-of-the-way side street it is now, and it was the cattle arch that was less convenient, unless you happened to be on that side of the road. If it was raining it could be inconvenient even then, as it was prone to flooding!
